What happens when a comic book artist sets out to make a painting? Dan Nadel of
Picturebox Inc. has curated a fabulous show that answers this question. The New Mutants is on view at
CANADA gallery. This playful collection includes the work of Ben Jones of
Paper Rad, C.F. from the cover of Kramer's Ergot, and Julie Doucet to name a few. All of the work does a seesaw balance between comic book and fine art sensibility. Looking at the show you realize that at this moment in the art world making distinctions between comics and fine art is a useless endeavor.
My favorite pieces were the collages in the back by
Brian Chippendale. Here is an image from the cover of his collection of drawings, 'Ninja' which is for sale there along with several other lust-worthy artist books!

They were also selling this excellent comic by Jessica Ciocci, 'Pig Tales'.

The show is up until July 22.
