Jackie Morris

Jackie Morris is an English illustrator who reminds me of my big sister Allison, the type of peaceful person you would want to escape to the country with and never come back. She is truly a modern Beatrix Potter.

The Last Unicorn

In researching mythical creatures for an animation I am working on, I remembered this childhood favorite movie, 'The Last Unicorn'. I don't think many people remember it, but if you did, here is a montage with an amazing updated theme song. If you think about the relevance of this message to today's ecosystem, especially the polar bears, who may be a vanished race in our childrens' lifetime. You may find yourself tearing up a bit as you listen and watch. Sorry to those of you who haven't seen this movie. You really missed out!

Subway Ceramic Art

Last night on my way to meet a friend I spotted this beautiful ceramic artwork adorning the walls of the Christopher Street Subway station. The images remind me of a mixture of Picasso and Chagall. Very eastern european, don't you think? The black bearded face is actually the face of the train. So creative! I think it would make a great plate design. The artist is Lee Brozgol.

Nest

This nest I made is nestled in a bunch of vines on a beautiful little entryway to a childrens' playground.

My First Twiggy House

This was my first Twiggy House. I put it there last Tuesday. Though in a state of mild disarray, it is still in place, nestled in the roots of a tree near a trail in Central Park. This is what it looks like today.

Twiggy House

In the crevice of a rock near the Central Park carousel you might find this twiggy dwelling which I made today. If you stop by to visit, you will also hear the pipe organ from the carousel blurting out recognizable tunes like 'Ding Dong the Witch is Dead' and 'If I Only Had A Brain'. There will be children climbing on the top of the rock and couples reading in the shade of the trees.

Twiggy Art

Here is a little imaginary dwelling I built in Central Park today. It reminds me of a beaver dam. I used twigs and sticks that I gathered in my beach bucket from the area directly around the bench. The inspiration for these sculptures comes from the miniature imaginary homes I built on a rock behind my house as a kid. Kah Leong once shot a model on this same bench, though I didn't know it till I showed him the picture.
If you want to look for it, it's off a pathway just below Belvedere Castle.

Fabulous Find

I found this bunny at a street vendor in Harlem. It is truly the strangest rabbit I have ever seen. I love the intricate 'third eye' and wonder what his paranormal powers could be. Any guesses?

Today I paid a visit to the studio of the insanely talented artist Michael Alan, who I know from art school. My mind was completely blown. I forgot to take a picture of him but did snap some other photos. Mike runs the notorious 'Drawathon', a weekly model drawing session that long ago became as much theater as anything else. The models are both nude and costumed, acting out scenes such as this coming week's 'Clockwork Orange' scenario where Mike will attempt to recondition one of the models with a hypnotic spinning globe. Mike has a show up right now at the Jonathan Shorr art gallery in Soho.

One of Mike's mammoth drawings. Reminds me of an aborigine dream. You can hardly tell from this picture but his drawings are extremely intricate, covered with a spider web like matrix of lines, extremely organic and harmonious. Stunning. I have never seen anything like it.

Just Released!

Here's one of my drawings I've been hanging on to for about 10 years. I always thought it would be warm and snug to live in a beaver dam. What clever creatures they are. When I made this picture I was working as a switchboard operator at a science museum in Texas. My desk was right next to the education department where they had a huge library of interesting science picture books for kids.

Who laid the rotten egg?

Stinky eggs are always embarrassing. But they were a prevalent feature around the pond where I grew up. Henry and Henrietta, the Canadian geese, would return each year to the pond and build a nest on Goose Poop island. (Henrietta wasn't much of a housekeeper). The would lay about 8 or nine eggs but somehow one or two would always go rolling onto the pond or fail to hatch. Once the little ones hatched it was time for swimming lessons. How I loved to paddle after the goose family in our little blue rowboat! Unfortunately the pond was also home to an Alligator Snapping turtle who had a taste for goslings. What a sight to see a little yellow baby goose disappear under the water, pop back up, then go down again never to return.
These turtles are as elusive and mysterious in their nature as the abominable snowman. Maybe that is why they are capable of living 150 years- males average are 175 lbs! (Yes you read that right). I never saw ours but did see the huge track he left in the mud one year when the pond dried up. Our neighbor was a duck and goose fanatic and kept his shotgun ready to 'take out' the massive reptiles. Much to my dismay he succeeded in shooting one of them and the other turtle was supposedly hit by a car years later when it wandered up out of the pond area, probably in search of a new mate. I think it got lonely. Imagine living so long without another turtle to call your sweet pea. . .

Puppy's Day at the Lab

Puppy got to spend a day at Sloan Kettering research center helping Mary at the bench. He was a little distracting and managed to 'accidentally' free two of the mice. Here is a picture I sketched of him at work.

Illustrators Unite!!!

I just found a new favorite website. Its called Illustration Mundo. Now I check it every day for yummy artwork. If you don't feel like digging for inspiration, this site does all the work for you by bringing together and catagorizing a massive collection of international talent. Here are a few examples from today's dig. This art is by Michael Deforge of Canada, Jaako Pallasvuo of Helsinki, and Kevin Ward of London.

Black Warrior

This drawing is inspired by a book my dad showed me on Hindu Gods. I mixed in some elements from Africa and Indonesia to come up with this character. He would probably make a FIERCE doll!

Puppy Doll

He's my interpretation of Snoopy. He's just 9" tall.
For some reason when I hold him I want to take him to the bath and use him as a scrubber! I think it's cause he's so small, and made of terrycloth. But then he would get stinky and that would make me sad. . .

Equestrian Doll

This doll is inspired by a picture of Calvin Klein standing in front of a great English Mansion dressed up in classic equestrian garb. When I was a teenager I used to take riding lessons and got to wear those funny pants with the lining in the insides. I loved the costume, the tack, cleaning the mud from the horses hooves with a hoof pick, and brushing the sweating horses after a nice ride around the ring. My favorite horse was a huge black and white Pinto named King.

My climbing vine

I just installed a climbing vine in the corner of my room. As I sewed it I reminisced about the one that grew in the woods behind my house in Connecticut when I was a kid. Those woods were downright jungly! The vine I recall was to thick and strong I could swing on it like a monkey.

Abstract Floatie lady

One friend said this image reminded them of a swimming pool. When they said that I thought of David Hockney's slightly erotic pool series. There's also a neat image he did of a man standing in a shower. I always loved those images because of the way he clashed abstract lines of water with realistically painted figures. If you have a minute to spend on google, check them out.

Boxer Veggie Head

Hooray! I finished this fella today just in time for his grand championship fight with future Hall of Famer Steamroller Bif. I do worry for him, he is quite puny. He spent so much time helping me design his costume that he totally neglected his workout regimen and appears quite the weakling. He'll no doubt have a black eye in the next photograph.

This doll was a Christmas present for my husband. I think knowing the doll would stay in my house made me feel justified in working extra hard on him. There's lots of hand embroidery like on his gloves and robe. The boxing gloves were truly a labor of love, and I had a real time trying to figure out how to make a reversible robe. In the end it was easy and looks great! I just made duplicate robes-one black and one green, then put right sides together. I attached the robe only at the cuffs and perimiter of the hood, skirt, etc, leaving a little opening to flip it right side out. His shoes were so fun to sew even though up close they are really clumsy. Does anyone know how to make shoes? I have some leather riding boots in mind for my next one. Maybe my old friend 'the cobbler' could give me a couple of pointers.
