Remember Verdell, the Ugly little puppy from 'As Good As It Gets' a few years ago? When I first saw that movie, I couldn't believe anyone would own or breed such an ugly creature! But of course by the end of the movie his cute tricks won me over. I had the same initial reaction when I saw the contestants for the 'Worlds' Ugliest Dog' competition. Who would help such creatures sustain life by nourishing them daily with dog food? And I'm an animal lover! But then I realized each dog has a devoted owner dedicated to feeding it and keeping it's ugly mug alive. Somehow that struck me as so pathetic and sweet that I began seeing each ugly dog as one half of a beautiful relationship. Now I love ugly dogs and even bald cats.
